The aim of this activity is to go and visit some local sites in Southland and to have a go at finding some gemstones or even some gold.
We aim to go on a rock treasure hunt around the Riverton, Colac Bay and Orepuki area, pan for gold in Waikaia, visit a couple of museums and learn some local history.
We will use this time to learn what gemstones are and how they along with gold is formed. We will also learn a little local history on early Maori occupation and gold mining in Southland/Otago.
