Escape on an island adventure to relax in peaceful surroundings with the bush, birds and beach at
your side. This trip is designed for students in year 9 wanting to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh
programme and qualifies as the practice tramp for the Bronze Award. A rough itinerary is outlined
Monday 4 th December
8.30am Leave Menzies College
11am Depart Bluff Ferry Terminal
12pm walk to backpackers accommodation
Set up tents
Lunch (pre-made lunch from home)
2.30pm-5.30pm Ulva Island tour with a DOC ranger
6.30pm Dinner (pre-made from home)
Tuesday 5 th December
9am pack bags and put excess gear in storage
10.30am begin walk to Port William
Lunch along the way
Arrive at Port William (roughly 5-6 hour walk)
Set up tents
Cook dinner in groups
Games on the beach
Wednesday 6 th December
9am fishing (Blue codding on tour boat)
12.30pm Lunch Fish n Chips
1.30pm Flight back to Invercargill airport, 15kg max baggage allowance
Back in Wyndham around 2.30-3pm
Prior to going students will have an introduction to the Duke of Ed programme and be guided through the website, though's who are serious about taking on the challenge will need to enroll before heading to camp.
Students need to have an understanding of Hypothermia, causes, signs and symptoms as well as how to identify and treat someone with hypothermia.
They need to create a gear list for the trip/tramp and also need to plan in cooking group’s lunch and snacks for the tramp, dinner for the second night and breakfast for Wednesday morning. This is food that can be carried into the hut and cooked on a billy. Students will also need to draft up letters for sponsorship and send those to local Rotary and Lions clubs as well as the MLT. We have been successful in the past gaining sponsorship for the trip. Students may also be required to book the hut and other bookings that need done.

8 minimum and 18 maximum so it will be a first in first served basis and your place will only be
secured when you have returned your permission slip to the school office.
The trip in total is roughly $250 this number will change depending on sponsorship and any fundraising done.
Enrolling into Bronze Duke of Ed will cost a further $100 but does not need to be paid until next year.
